Hello there! This article is for everyone, not writers alone. You might find it useful.

Content:

Recognizing your talent:

Most people are unable to discover their writing talent early. This may be because of lack of opportunity or unavailability of resources. Here are a few pointers that show there might be a writer in you;

  • You read wide and have a thirst for good stories.

  • You are a good narrator enjoy storytelling.

  • You critically analyze every book you read.

  • You're naturally inquisitive and very observant.

  • You can see situations from multiple points of view.

  • You enjoy researching for information on different topics.

  • You know a good plot when you see one.

  • And most importantly, you are very creative and have what some people call "a wild imagination".

Sharing your work:

Once you have discovered you can write, the next step is writing for an audience. This audience could be anyone; your family, friends, teachers or even a stranger. The reason for this is so that you can get feedback from other people. You should know whether people genuinely enjoy your work. You will also figure out your strengths and weaknesses, which help you to realize where you should work on.

Showcase your talent:

This is different from the last step in that here, you're putting your work out there for a larger audience. Now, this may be difficult for some, especially if you're introverted like myself. One of the major reasons though is lack of confidence. You're doubting the quality of your work. You're asking questions like;

  • What if my work isn't good enough? Answer: nobody's writing is good enough, that's why we're all improving.

  • What if people don't like it? Answer: There will surely be someone who likes your writing and there will be someone who doesn't. Get over it.

  • What if I'm not really a good writer? Answer: if you enjoy what you do, then you'll be good at it. Just make sure you actually enjoy it.

Where? How?

Now, the next challenge people face is not knowing the right place to display their writing talent. There are multiple social spaces for you to share your work to an audience, you just have to find one which best suits your taste. Also if you're not feeling up to social media yet then you can slow down a bit. No one said it would be comfortable. Someone did say you should get out of your comfort zone once in a while.

Never give up, seriously.

No matter how confident you are, there will be highs and lows in life. This applies to every aspect of life.

Yes, you will get negative comments. Yes, it will be difficult to finish that poem or story. Yes, you will have writer's block, which is a whole other topic on its own (we'll discuss that later). Yes, you will want to give up. But so did every other writer before you. Yeah, even Jane Austen. But If she did then who would have blessed us with such beautiful works of art.

The point is you have a voice, you deserve to be heard however you want to express yourself. Writing is a form of expression, so go ahead and put it down however you want. I can confidently say if you've reached this point, I believe in you. You are definitely a writer, no matter what anyone says.

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF, IT'S NOT JUST A SAYING!

Practice, practice, practice!

So obviously, like I said before, we are all improving as artists. No one is perfect. As a writer, you have to read wide. As you're reading other people's works, you could improve on yourself. Being a writer doesn't mean you shouldn't read, I have no idea why people think that. In fact, you need to read more. If you ever feel the need to take a break from writing, make sure to keep your creativity active by reading.
