Creativity block (writer's block)

Introduction

You ever stare at that empty page for 30 minutes? Ever pick up the pen for some time only to put it back down without writing anything? Ever feel frustrated when this happens? Yes, we all do. This is writer's block and we all hate it. But we must go through it.

What is Writer's block?

Writer's block is a kind of creativity block. Creativity block, here is the feeling of being unable to reach your creativity. It feels like there's a barrier between you and you inner creativity. This is experienced by every creator; artist, singer, screenwriter, even some famous influencers. Writers are obviously not an exception. Don't worry, it is not a disease even though it sure feels like one.

Causes of Writer's block

The possible reasons you're unable to write.

  • Stress: Sometimes, we feel the need to pressure our brains into coming up with ideas. My advice, just don't. Putting too much pressure on one's brain is never ever good. You might be shocked at how fast your brain closes up once you do this.

  • Fear and Self doubt: This is just as dangerous because you're the one who's limiting yourself. Your inner fears are stopping you from doing what you want. Maybe you're comparing yourself with others or you simply don't have faith in your abilities.

  • Lack of inspiration: You don't feel inspired to create this could be for various reasons such as a disorganized environment, noise, distractions, or maybe you're just not feeling it at the moment.

  • Inability to focus: If you are finding it difficult to concentrate then you probably have something else in your mind at that moment. You're just forcing yourself to write when you know you can't focus.

  • Previous failures: You've been rejected before, who hasn't? We have to face one form of rejection or the other at some point in our lives. This can obviously be discouraging.

Solutions to Writer's block

Luckily where there's a wall (or creativity block) there's a way. Believe it or not, it is not the end of your writing journey.

  • Take some time off: It's okay to take a break. Even if that project is due tomorrow, it's better to leave and come back feeling more productive than to sit unproductive for hours.

  • Change your environment: You can barely achieve anything in a cluttered environment. This is why when your trying to create anything, you must make sure your surroundings are clean and well organized.

  • Rest: If you're tired, you should definitely rest. A well rested mind can come up with so many amazing ideas whereas a tired mind might produce lazy ideas, the point here being that you're most active when you're well rested.

  • Self Assurance: Give yourself that pep talk. Read those motivational quotes. Be confident in your abilities. It goes a long way.

  • Go outside: It could be that you've been inside for too long. Get some fresh air and connect with nature. Who knows, you could get inspired.

  • Read other writers' works: As a writer, you obviously need to read wide. You can read something new or re read your classics. You may want to create something unique but there is no harm in drawing inspiration from someone else's work.

  • Talk: You can discuss your ideas with people who you know can help you overcome your writer's block. This could also stimulate your imagination.

  • Be settled: If something is genuinely bothering and your mind is not at peace at that moment, that may be the cause of the barrier you are experiencing. In this case, you have to settle your mind completely be at peace in order to defeat your writer's block.

Conclusion

I want to remind you that I am a writer myself which means I also have writer's block. It is something I experience so I'm not just saying what I don't know anything about. Here are a few last words

It is NOT THE END of your writing journey. In fact it is an important part of your journey. Do not give up because of writer's block. You're not the first and will definitely not be the last to experience it.
